From the Trenches to the Executive Suite

Shannon’s career began in customer service at PHP, where she answered calls from Medicare members navigating the complexities of their coverage. This early experience ingrained in her the importance of compassion and understanding in healthcare. One pivotal moment that shaped her leadership style was in 2006, when Medicare introduced Part D prescription drug coverage.

“I remember a large event in Salem where so many people showed up that we had to split the crowd into two rooms. I hadn’t planned to present, but I stepped in to lead one session, demonstrating to my team that leadership means being in the trenches with them,” Shannon says. This hands-on approach has remained a cornerstone of her leadership philosophy, fostering authenticity and empathy.

Championing Women in Leadership

The healthcare industry has historically seen gender disparities at the executive level. However, at PHP, there is a strong commitment to diverse leadership. Shannon encourages women to advocate for themselves and celebrate their achievements.

“Don’t be afraid to share your successes. I make a point to amplify the voices of women leaders on my team, whether by engaging with their LinkedIn posts or encouraging them to showcase their wins. When they do, the support and encouragement they receive are overwhelming,” Shannon says.

Healthcare Transformation and the Power of a Nurturing Perspective

PHP’s mission to serve the poor and vulnerable is central to Shannon’s work. Her leadership is driven by a deep sense of empathy, ensuring that health coverage extends beyond paying claims to addressing broader social determinants of health.

“Healthcare is about the whole person. Beyond covering doctor visits, we ask: Is there food insecurity? Housing instability? Do they need additional mental health support? My identity aligns with this mission, allowing me to make impactful decisions that improve lives,” she shares.

Community Leadership: The Heart and Stroke Walk

Shannon’s leadership extends beyond PHP. As the 2025 Heart and Stroke Walk Chair for Oregon, she is dedicated to spreading life-saving education about heart health.

“This year’s focus is on ensuring people know CPR, how to use an AED, and where these devices are located. I’m integrating these lessons into our organization, our neighborhoods, and beyond,” she says. Shannon’s commitment to community health reinforces PHP’s mission of ensuring healthcare access for all.

Embracing Authenticity in Leadership

Shannon has learned that being a successful leader means embracing all aspects of who she is –whether as an executive, a mother, a wife, or a community advocate.

“I used to compartmentalize my roles, but now I see that embracing my full self makes me a stronger leader. Whether I’m at the Heart Walk wearing heart-shaped sunglasses or making strategic decisions in the boardroom, being authentic allows me to connect more deeply with those around me,” she says.
