Taking Control of Your Health: The Power of Preventive Care and Technology

27 February 2025

At Providence Health Plan (PHP), we believe in Health For All – a vision that starts with empowering individuals to take charge of their health. Preventive care is a cornerstone of this mission, and with the help of modern technology, it’s easier than ever to stay proactive about your well-being. Recently, Dr. Laurel Soot, Chief Medical Officer at PHP, sat down to discuss the importance of preventive care, the role of technology, and how small steps can lead to big changes in your health.

What Is Preventive Care?

Preventive care is all about staying ahead of potential health issues before they become serious. As Dr. Soot explains, there are two key aspects to consider:

1. Early Detection: Screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies may not prevent cancer, but they can catch it early when it’s most treatable. This leads to better outcomes and a higher quality of life.

2. Disease Prevention: Conditions like heart disease can often be prevented through lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, monitoring blood pressure, and taking prescribed medications.

“The goal is to give people the tools and knowledge they need to take control of their health,” says Dr. Soot. “Whether it’s preventing disease or catching it early, the power is in your hands.”

Barriers to Preventive Care

Despite its importance, many people struggle to prioritize preventive care. Dr. Soot points out that women, especially moms, often put everyone else’s needs before their own. “We see it all the time—moms scheduling appointments for their kids and spouses but neglecting their own health,” she says. “The first step is making time for yourself and picking up the phone to schedule that check-up or screening.”

How Technology Is Changing the Game

Technology is revolutionizing the way we approach preventive care, making it more accessible and personalized than ever before. Here are some of the exciting ways technology is helping:

  • Wearable Devices: Smartwatches and fitness trackers can monitor heart rate, activity levels, and even detect falls. “The SOS function on smartwatches is a game-changer,” says Dr. Soot. “If someone falls, the device can alert emergency services, ensuring they get help quickly.”

  • Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs): For individuals with diabetes, CGMs provide real-time glucose readings, helping them manage their condition more effectively. “In some cases, we’ve seen patients reverse type 2 diabetes through careful monitoring and lifestyle changes,” Dr. Soot shares.

  • Telehealth: Virtual appointments have made healthcare more convenient, especially for busy families and younger generations. “Teenagers and young adults are much more likely to engage with behavioral health services through telehealth,” says Dr. Soot. “It removes barriers like transportation and scheduling conflicts.”

Taking the First Step

If you’re ready to take a more active role in your health, Dr. Soot emphasizes the importance of building a relationship with a trusted physician. “Technology is a fantastic tool, but it works best when paired with guidance from a healthcare professional,” she says. “Start by scheduling an appointment to discuss your health goals and create a personalized plan.”

Here are a few actionable steps to get started:

1. Schedule a Check-Up: Make an appointment with your primary care physician to discuss preventive screenings and health goals.

2. Explore Wearable Tech: Consider using a smartwatch or fitness tracker to monitor your activity and health metrics.

3. Try Telehealth: If in-person visits are challenging, take advantage of virtual appointments for convenience and accessibility.

4. Focus on One Goal: Whether it’s improving your diet, increasing physical activity, or managing a chronic condition, start small and build from there.

The Bigger Picture: Advocating for Your Health

Dr. Soot leaves us with an empowering message: “You have full control over your health.” In a world where so much feels out of our hands, preventive care is one area where we can make a real difference. By embracing technology, partnering with healthcare providers, and prioritizing self-care, we can all take steps toward a healthier future.
