Providence Health Plan (PHP) is pleased to welcome Michael van Duren, MD, as Medical Director of Medicare/Medicaid and Health Equity. In this new role, Dr. van Duren will provide clinical leadership in the design, development, and implementation of Medicaid and Medicare care models, with an additional focus on Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (D-SNP) Models of Care and value-based care initiatives.
Most recently, Dr. van Duren served as the Vice President of Business Development at QURE Healthcare. In this role, he led strategic partnerships, sales, and marketing for a national leader in provider behavior change, serving value-based care, acute care, and life sciences companies through patient simulations. Prior to that, he held the position of Senior Medical Director of Performance Improvement at Embold Health, where he developed and implemented a physician evaluation strategy for large health systems across the country.
Dr. van Duren started his career in healthcare in family medicine and obstetrics, delivering over 4,000 babies and serving in critical access hospitals. After spending the last five years supporting health software start-ups, he shared that he is eager to return to his passion for supporting a mission-driven not-for-profit health plan.
“I know how important it is to be in a culture where there is a clear focus on a mission that is more than the financial bottom line. The fact that Providence Health Plan is not-for-profit is important, but even more important is whether people “walk the talk” of the mission,” said van Duren. “I am excited to join an organization like this where they take the caring about each other and about the members seriously.”
Throughout his career, Dr. van Duren has been a consistent leader, working to make medical practices more consistent, affordable, and data-driven. As a senior executive at a regional hospital, he helped to expand the access and quality of care for local communities and made the hospital a destination for advanced treatments. He also led quality teams that improved outcomes in several areas of care, earning national recognition.
Originally from The Netherlands and fluent in four languages, Dr. van Duren spent most of his adult life in California, relocated to Coos Bay, Oregon, and now resides in Washington state.
