Session Highlights

Don kicked off the discussion by introducing the ever-important topic of health equity and warmly welcoming Dr. Hathi. She shared her inspiring journey to Oregon and her fervent commitment to health equity, underscoring the state’s ambitious goal to eliminate health disparities by 2030. Her personal anecdotes and professional insights set a compelling tone for the session, engaging the audience right from the start.

Oregon's Health Equity Goals

Dr. Hathi emphasized the importance of setting bold goals, drawing from her experiences with the World Health Organization’s global polio eradication efforts. She highlighted how ambitious targets can mobilize resources and shift perceptions, making the seemingly impossible, possible. This aspirational approach has been a cornerstone of Oregon's health policies, driving systemic changes that aim to benefit all residents.

Innovative Policies and Programs

Dr. Hathi detailed Oregon’s groundbreaking initiatives that utilize Medicaid funds to tackle social determinants of health, such as housing, rental assistance, and climate supports. She proudly noted the state’s historic achievement of 97% health coverage for its residents and the recent expansion of Medicaid to all eligible Oregonians, regardless of immigration status. These programs are designed to address the root causes of health disparities, providing a holistic approach to healthcare that goes beyond traditional medical services.
